Artist Statement:

My art journey has been one of curiosity and discovery. I have a creative streak that found various outlets over the years. Sometimes in music, sometimes in writing, and sometimes in hand-making items. Most of my adult life was spent learning about and studying plants, and then teaching horticulture at WIU. A great deal of my creative energy went into that, and I loved it.

After retirement, I thought I would continue in that field, but then I got drawn into a world of mosaic-making. During my journey into mosaics, I took some side-trips into watercolor painting, colored pencil drawing, graphite and charcoal drawing, Zentangle, painting with acrylics, gourd-carving, and pine-needle basket weaving. But I always returned to my home base, making mosaics. I have been fortunate to learn from some of the best mosaic artists in the U.S., both online and in person.

As a mosaic artist, I love working in both 2D and 3D mosaic formats. I enjoy constructing both familiar and original sculptural forms to serve as substrates for my mosaics. I have explored and expanded my medium in a variety of directions, where impulse, whimsy, and my curiosity lead me. The scale of my work ranges from micro-mosaic jewelry, to shoes, to reclaimed windows, and even a unique “garden throne”, made during the pandemic. My subject matter is also varied, incorporating nature themes, abstractions, and color studies. I embrace Edward Degas’ notion of creating art to “make others see” things they have never seen before, or to see them in a new way. Art is an experience – both for the artists, during creation, and for each individual viewer. That is what I celebrate in my artistic creations.
