Losing Normal

“Losing Normal” is a 17 minute film that explores the effect of the pandemic on teenagers’ mental health. The piece combines the words of anonymous Rushville-Industry High School students, modern dance movement, and visual storytelling. Throughout the work students explore the struggles of isolation, suicidal thoughts, and distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The goal of this piece was to give our youth the opportunity to have their voices heard.

“Losing Normal” came about because Becky Jones, a local dance instructor, wondered how our teenagers were dealing with the pandemic. She approached Tonya Woods, Rushville-Industry High School English Teacher, and Erin Eveland, Executive Director of The Hub – Arts and Cultural Center, to help bring the idea to fruition. In the end the experience was painful, but healing for all involved.

We are grateful to those who helped make this film possible. Ryan Stark of Stark Studio and Jenine Henninger of Firefly Studio captured the event in film and photography (respectively). “Losing Normal” was filmed in the Rushville Odd Fellows’ Lodge and DK Boutique provided props and the red carpet for the premiere.
