Community Art Project

The Earth with Art is Poetry in Motion | Call for Artists

In honor of Earth Day and National Poetry Month the Hub is offering an exciting opportunity for people to contribute to a community art project. We have a series of eighteen outlines of the Earth, and we are asking participants of all ages to color and fill them with words or phrases that are important to them. Each page will become a frame in a short animation of the Earth’s rotation.

When we put all the pages together, your art  will become part of something bigger: a living, moving, one-of-a-kind film made by our community, for our community.

How to participate:

Pick up a coloring sheet at the Hub, you can decorate here during our usual hours or take it home.

Color it however you like — any medium welcome!

Return it to the Hub by Tuesday, April 21st at 5 p.m.

The finished video will be shared on our social media and website on Earth Day, April 22nd, 2026.

This project is free, and open to all. Check out the Facebook Event page at the link above, and share it with your friends, we want as many particpants as possible!

The Declaration of Independence

Community Conversations | History Belongs to All of Us

Join us for the first of four Community Conversations: History Belongs to All of Us, a free, facilitated program series brought to you by The Hub – Arts & Cultural Center in partnership with Illinois Humanities! In this series we’ll be exploring local history through facilitated conversations and humanities-driven activities that center curiosity and active listening, encourage fresh perspectives, and highlight the wealth that comes from remaining connected to one another.

In this first session we’ll be diving deep into the founding document of the United States, not just to read it, but to talk about it. What does it mean? What did it promise? How is it relevant today? Bring your curiosity, your opinions, and your appetite, because The Bread Basket is bringing the snacks!

This isn’t a lecture. It’s a conversation. Come ready to listen, share, and see history in a whole new way.

This event is free and open to the public.

Facilitators | Moe Billingsley & Xochi Anderson

Date & Time | Sunday, April 26th, from 2 – 4 p.m.

This Land is Your Land

The Folksongs of Woody Guthrie, 1912-1967

Join us in welcoming Illinois Humanities Roads Scholar, Bucky Halker, to the Hub where he will present “This Land Is Your Land” a program that combines music performance (guitar and vocal) and spoken commentary. The program features songs by legendary folksinger and songwriter Woodrow Wilson “Woody” Guthrie (1912-1967), as well as commentary on the time period and each song. This commentary frames the program in a larger historical context and offers specific details on Guthrie’s songs and his biography. The program also includes two sing-along songs.
The presentation aligns with the Illinois America 250 Commission’s theme “We the People.” This theme invites us to explore ideas of who has been included and who has been left out of the nation’s promise, as well as how people from all backgrounds have shaped and reshaped what it means to be part of “the people.” The Illinois America 250 Commission’s goals are to uplift local stories, places, and programs; build pride; and showcase how Illinois brings the ideals of the Declaration of Independence to life.

Date & Time | Friday, May 1st, at 7 p.m.

There is no registration required for this event, but feel free to let us (and all your friends) know you’re coming by checking out the Facebook event page.
