Eventually by Dona Lantz

Purple and Yellow crocuses painted by 16 people

We are pleased to welcome Dona Lantz to The Hub Gallery this January and February to share her newest body of work entitled “Eventually”.

“My work reflects my attachment to our earth, the family farm and the gifts found when gardening
such as the surprise of finding a four leaf clover or the light on the back of a sunflower. Having
lived in major cities for forty years, my work also reflects snippets of the beauty of urban life like
a detail of a wall or sidewalk grafitti. However, the moments of everyday life that I photograph
could be seen in anyone’s home, mine, a friend’s or neighbor’s or in the home of a complete
stranger thus illustrating the universality and beauty of our collective day to day lives” -Dona Lantz

Dona Lantz retired at the end of 2019 from the position of Provost at Columbus College
of Art & Design in Columbus, OH and moved back to the Midwest family farm. From
2015-2017 she held the position of Associate Provost for Curriculum at the College for
Creative Studies in Detroit, MI. Previously from 2001-2015 Lantz held the position of
Academic Dean at Moore College of Art & Design in Philadelphia, PA. Lantz received
her B.S. from the Department of Art at Illinois State University in 1977 and her M.A.
from the University of California Berkeley, Department of Art in 1982. From 1983-85 she
was an instructor and the Photography Supervisor at the A.S.U.C. Studio on the
Berkeley campus. In 1986 Lantz began working at the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI)
as the Photography Department Manager and in 1987 she began teaching part-time in
the Photography Department. In 1994 she became the Assistant Dean to Academic
Affairs and continued teaching until her move to Philadelphia in 2001. In addition to
teaching at SFAI she has taught workshops in Mexico City.

Lantz actively exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions between 1989 and 2007.
She had solo exhibitions in Pennsylvania, Oregon, Nevada, California and Washington.
She had numerous group exhibitions in California but also had group exhibitions in
Pennsylvania, New Mexico, New York, Washington, Missouri, Florida and Texas. Lantz
has given artist talks in conjunction with her exhibitions. From 2008 until the time she
retired from her academic administration Lantz was highly successful in developing new
undergraduate and graduate programs, preparing for and receiving reaccreditation in
two institutions, providing strong leadership in response to the 2008 recession, and in
leading efforts to recruit, hire, and retain faculty in more than one institution. During this
eleven year period Lantz did not pursue new exhibition opportunities however, she
continued to actively shoot and assemble new work.

Lantz’s early work was primarily black and white shot with a 4×5 camera where she
utilized multiple exposures to create painterly mural sized images examining symbols
and iconography of feminine spirituality. By the late 90s Lantz shifted to shooting color
35mm film and while still interested in examining dualities and feminine symbols she
began exploring the use of the diptych to compare and contrast images creating visual
narratives and emotional vignettes. In 2012 she stopped shooting with film and began
using a digital camera and currently shoots almost exclusively with her iPhone. After
retiring in January 2020 Lantz had a studio built at the family farm which has allowed
her to establish a dedicated studio practice. She has continued utilizing the diptych and
groupings of diptychs to create a visual vocabulary. Lantz’s most recent body of work is
titled “Eventually”.
