The work of Janice Rockwell
Exhibit Statement
The paintings in this exhibit are created from black & white family photos taken from my childhood and more current photos of our grandchildren. My goal is to express loving relationships through the combinations of colors, textures and shapes. As I apply paint with palette knives and layers, the paintings seem to create themselves.
Artist Bio
Throughout my working career as an educator and counselor, painting has been a part of my leisure life. My interest in art as a child and encouragement from my family, led me to become an art teacher.
I completed my degree at Western Illinois University in Macomb in art education. Though we both had planned to return to our hometown of Belleville, my husband, Dean and I remained there to teach and raise our family. The university’s educational opportunities and mentoring faculty have been a life-long enrichment. I eventually returned to complete my Master’s in school counseling.
Watercolor became my medium of choice. To stay involved in my art, I began painting in earnest during my school counseling career. Since retiring, I’ve taken additional figure drawing & painting courses at WIU. I work in my rural Macomb home studio Earth, Air & Water. My work is found locally and regionally and occasionally in nationally juried exhibits.
